A copy of a copy: why your spare key sticks

Copies of copies get worse each generation. Here’s why we cut from the original or from the code.

A wall of hundreds of key blanks hanging on hooks

Every time a key is duplicated, tiny errors in depth and spacing add up. After three or four generations, the key may still turn but it wears the lock and sticks.

At the shop, we cut your copy from the original, check it in the lock, and deburr the edges so it doesn’t catch. For locks we know, we can also cut a brand-new key from the code, so it’s as good as the first one.

Bring us your worst key and we’ll tell you if a fresh one will fix the sticking. A standard house key is $3.50.
